Tuesday, October 22 from 7:00pm – 8:00pm
In collaboration with Ohio Regional Music Arts and Cultural Outreach we are pleased to present a special multi-media talk/performance featuring members of Shashmaqam, a vibrantly colorful ensemble that performs the centuries-old musical traditions of Central Asia.
As the United States’ premier ensemble dedicated to Central Asia’s music and dance traditions, Shashmaqam performs a panorama of classical and folk music from Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. The ensemble brings to life the rich and diverse musical traditions of Central Asia, where Jewish and Muslim musicians have long coexisted in a flourishing cultural symbiosis.
In this special program, members of Shashmaqam will introduce the audience to the richly cosmopolitan culture and history of Transoxiana expressed through its unique mix of architecture, religion, language, foods, poetry and music. The performers will also share their experiences growing up in the Soviet system and emigrating to build a new life in Central Asian enclaves in Queens and Brooklyn. In the Conference Room.
