Smithville Native American Day

Sunday, July 17 - 1:30 PM

Join us Sunday July 18th (1:30PM to 4PM) at the Smithville Community Historical Society For Native American Day. Three speakers (Jason Murvine, Robert Haag and Paul Wischt) will bring their expertise to bear on the subject of Native Americans in the Eastern United States and their culture. Jason Murvine will share artifacts that relate to primitive fire starting, archery and clothing as practiced in many eastern tribes. Robert Haag has collected pre-historic relics since childhood and will display examples of artifacts of local tribes particularly arrowheads they fashioned and used in this area of what is now Ohio c1730. In addition, Mr. Haag will have books that he has authored for sale at the open house. Paul Wischt is a flint knapper making flaked or chipped stone tools to manufacture gun flints, spear and dart points, arrowheads, knives and scrapers just as Native Americans tribes did. These artisans were vital members of their tribes making the tools everyone in their communities needed. Mr. Wischt will demonstrate this ancient art. There will also be a vintage baseball game with the Smithville Stars Vs the Bay Village Villagers at 2 PM. All buildings in the Pioneer Village will be open to tour. And as always this is a free event.
