St. Christopher's - Advent 4

Sunday, December 18 - 10:00 AM

St. Christopher's Sunday worship is centered on Christ through the proclamation of Holy Scripture and the administration of Holy Communion.

In the year of the church, the season of Advent is comprised of the time leading up to Christmas, beginning with the fourth Sunday before Christmas and ending on Christmas Eve Night/Christmas Day.  It is the first season of the church year.

The word Advent itself simply means “arrival,” or “coming,” and it is in this season where we join the narrative of Scripture as Israel is expecting and awaiting Messiah to come.  This Messiah would not simply be any “anointed one,” but God himself who would come and dwell among us (John 1:14), and ultimately give his life as a ransom for many (Mark 10:45) so that we can be forgiven of our sins and have eternal life, which is the life in which we know the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom he has sent (John 17:3).

In Advent, as we remember the call for Israel to be ready and prepared for Messiah to come, we do so with an eye to the Second Advent, the second coming of Christ, when he will come in glory to judge the living and the dead, and to establish his kingdom on earth as it is in heaven once and for all.  So in this season of Advent, let us repent and be ready, and foster in our hearts a longing for Jesus to return as we await his coming in glory.
